About "The safety of a swim ring"

by Jan Keteleer

About the artwork

This painting is my ode to the serene joy of summer and the universal simplicity of being present in a fleeting but perfect moment. The scene centers on a figure, their back facing us, suspended in a turquoise sea of tranquility. Their dark, braided hair cascades down their back as they hold onto a large, radiant yellow swim ring. The vibrancy of the yellow against the endless turquoise expanse reflects a lively contrast, embodying freedom, calm, and playful innocence.
The water embraces the figure gently, and its subtle ripples around the swim ring hint at movement, yet it feels as though time has paused here. Through this painting, I wanted to capture the quiet stillness of immersing oneself in nature, where the stresses of reality fade away. The shadowed contours of the figure tell their own story of sunlight and warmth, while the swim ring serves as a symbol of buoyancy, safety, and the carefree ease of childhood summers.
Every brushstroke was intended to evoke a sensory connection—to feel the coolness of the water, the gentle heat of the sun, and the unfiltered bliss of being alive in this moment. It’s a moment we all long to relive, sheltered by simplicity, nostalgia, and light.
