About ‘The van Nelle factory’ by Karin van Bylevelt

The former Van Nelle factory on the Delfshavense Schie in Rotterdam is considered the foremost industrial monument in the Netherlands. As such, it was also recognised globally when it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 2014.[1] Designed by Leendert van der Vlugt of the architectural firm Brinkman & Van der Vlugt in collaboration with structural engineer Jan Wiebenga, the former Van Nelle factory is a textbook example of the new building style. The Van Nelle factory houses a variety of companies. In addition, a number of spaces are used for meetings, conferences and events. The complex is not freely accessible to tourist visitors; groups can tour the building with a guide. A visitor centre with an exhibition has been set up since 2017.
