Thy Will Be Done by Mariska Gilbers

In this oil painting, we see Jesus kneeling in prayer to his Father. He is wearing a red cloak and his face reflects the deep fear, tension and inner struggle of the moment. The sweat of blood alludes to the events in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus is preparing for his impending crucifixion.

The dark colours and deep shadows lend the work a poignant and subdued atmosphere. Yet, in the top left-hand corner, a powerful beam of light appears, pointing towards God. This light contrasts with the darkness and symbolises hope, faith and the presence of God, precisely at the moment when all seems lost.

The red cloak draws the viewer’s attention to Jesus whilst also alluding to the sacrifice that awaits him. His kneeling posture emphasises vulnerability, but also surrender and trust.

Through this work, I aim to encourage the viewer to reflect on themes such as suffering, faith, fear and hope. The painting demonstrates that vulnerability and strength can coexist. The combination of oil paint, deep contrasts and subtle light creates a dramatic image that can be meaningful within both a Christian and a contemporary interior context.

The work invites silence, contemplation and a moment of personal reflection.
