The artist paints one half-timbered house after the other here on a street in a typical German streetscape.
Half-timbering is a method of building walls in which the supporting structure consists of wooden beams. Trusses usually consist of a wooden beam structure with a filling in of the spaces in between ("compartments"). Originally, the infill consists of a wickerwork of willow, oak, dirt tree or hazel cloves covered with a mixture of straw and loam.
In Germany, many historic half-timbered buildings have survived, especially in the lower regions where stone is scarce. In Lower Saxony, the town centre of Einbeck consists mainly of richly decorated half-timbered houses. This town is located on the Fachwerkstraße, a tourist route that crosses Germany from north to south.
Christian Rohlfs (Groß Niendorf (then Niendorf), Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 22 November 1849 - Hagen, North Rhine-Westphalia 8 January 1938) was a German painter of expressionism.
