Bacchus, god of wine, emerges from the landscape to the right with his followers. He falls in love with Ariadne and jumps from his chariot, pulled by two cheetahs, toward her. Ariadne had been abandoned on the Greek island of Naxos by Theseus, whose ship can be seen in the distance. The picture shows her initial fear of Bacchus, but he lifted her to the sky and turned her into a constellation, represented by the stars above her head.
Titian (Pieve di Cadore, Italy, circa 1487 - Venice, Aug. 27, 1576), actually Tiziano Vecelli or Vecellio, was one of the most important painters of the High Renaissance. In 1532 he came into contact with Emperor Charles V, who elevated Titian to the peerage and appointed him court painter. Titian then worked for Philip II of Spain, for whom he produced mostly mythological, erotic works.
