About "Traditional Becaks lined up beneath the worn city walls"

by Franck Perron

About the artwork

This image captures a typical scene from everyday life in Yogyakarta, in the heart of Java: a row of becaks, the traditional Indonesian tricycles used for local transport, parked along a wall worn by time. The contrast between the bright colours - pink, green and orange - and the industrial décor of concrete and rust creates a striking balance between tradition and modernity. These vehicles, often abandoned in favour of faster means of transport, remain living symbols of the Indonesian soul, embodying patience, simplicity and the beauty of the manual gesture. Each becak bears the marks of time: peeling paint, rusting metal, wood polished by the years. Behind this apparent immobility, we can make out the peaceful rhythm of the day, the conversations of the drivers and the laughter of passers-by. It's an urban scene full of authenticity, where colour and material tell the story of a city deeply attached to its roots.
