Triumphal arch built in honour of Emperor Caracalla, on the Decumanus Maximus, AD 217
Volubilis is an ancient Roman city built on a Phoenician-Carthaginian settlement from the third century BC. The city was inhabited for at least 1,000 years and there are many archaeological remains of various peoples who lived here from prehistoric times to the Islamic period. In the late eighth century, Volubilis became the capital of Idris ibn Abdallah (Idriss I), the founder of the Idrisid dynasty, and Morocco's first Islamic state. In the 11th century, Volubilis was abandoned and the Idrisid capital was moved to Fez.
