Tug and rowers in the Beer Canal

The tug Brent glides through the Beer Canal, alongside rowers moving deftly along the quay wall in their small boats. In the distance, the Maasvlakte stretches out, a forest of steel and colour: giant container cranes rise against the sky, while stacks of containers like brightly coloured building blocks await transport. Between the behemoths of container ships, the water glistens in the sunlight. The sun goes down the sea vapour makes the view a little less clear. And the wind picks up a little more. Evening falls over the port of Rotterdam.

Port photography is a fascinating form of photography that focuses on capturing the activity in ports. Port cities are often bustling centres of trade and industry, with ships, trucks and trains moving in and out to load and unload goods. This offers photographers the opportunity to capture beautiful images of large ships docked at the quayside, crane machines loading and unloading containers from and onto the ships, and workers busy at work. Port photography can be challenging, as there is often a lot of movement and activity, and the light is constantly changing.
