Location: Val d'Orcia ItalyThe landscape of Val d'Orcia is part of the agricultural hinterland of Siena, redrawn and developed when, in the 14th and 15th centuries, it was incorporated into the territory of the city-state to reflect an idealized model of good governance and to create an aesthetically pleasing image. The distinctive aesthetic of the landscape, flat chalk plains from which rise almost conical hills topped by fortified settlements, inspired many artists. Their images have become exemplary of the beauty of well-managed agricultural landscapes of the Renaissance. The inscription includes: an agricultural and pastoral landscape reflecting innovative land management systems; towns and villages; farmsteads; and the Roman Via Francigena and its associated abbeys, inns, shrines, bridges, etc.
