Two Faces, One Strength by Color Square

The work depicts a powerfully stylised portrait in which two faces merge almost seamlessly. This visual fusion makes the image intriguing: only after looking at it for some time does it become clear where one profile ends and the other begins. Large swathes of intense orange cut through the dark skin tones, whilst bright red lips, earrings and clothing lend the whole a distinctively graphic energy. The composition plays strongly on identity, proximity and contrast. The figures seem almost to touch one another, yet at the same time remain distinct silhouettes. The central black shape can therefore be interpreted as a shadow, a face or a connecting space. It is precisely this ambiguity that gives the work its power.
Striking is the large petrol-green shape at the top, which hangs over the composition like an extravagant hat. On the left, the clean vertical stripes provide rhythm, whilst on the bottom right, undulating black lines form a more playful counterbalance. The enormous earring in a rich red almost functions as a graphic symbol in its own right.
The limited yet intense colour palette gives the portrait a modern, fashionable and almost editorial feel. The work strikes a balance between portraiture, fashion illustration and pop art, and immediately captures the viewer’s attention with its confident visual language.
