The Westman Islands is a group of islands and the town of the same name about 11 km off the south-west coast of Iceland. The largest island, Heimaey (literally: Home Island), is the only inhabited island. About 4,400 people live there (2020). Before 1973, there were about 5,000. Shelter huts and other mostly dilapidated buildings are found on the other islands, mainly used by birders and bird hunters. Besides 4 million puffins, many other species of seabirds occur, millions in all.
