About the artwork

Portrait of koi carp swimming in a pond with water lilies against a dark background.

An adorable animal print that focuses on nature.

The print size is square and the panda can be printed on various materials.

The Romans discovered that carps were strong fish, which were perfect food fish and could reproduce easily. So during their many voyages across Europe, Africa and Asia, the Romans regularly took carp with them, which they then released into large breeding ponds. During one of those distant voyages, the carp also ended up in China. In China, the carp, especially the coloured mutants, was considered a sacred fish. The carp stood for strength, wisdom, perseverance and luck. Indeed, myth has it that at the source of a river, behind a sky-high waterfall, lived a great black dragon. This black dragon terrorised the entire world. Despite many attempts, no one managed to destroy the dragon. At one point, a large carp swam in the river, which proved capable of swimming up the waterfall. Once it reached the top, the carp turned into a white dragon. The white dragon proved capable, after a fierce battle, of defeating the black dragon. From then on, so the story goes, the carp has been a sacred fish for both the Chinese and the Japanese.
