About "Unique close up of a fish-eating European Otter (lutra lutra)"

by Sabrina Engels

About the artwork

This European Otter has just emerged from the water with a freshly caught fish, a roach, which it devours deliciously on a wooden jetty above the water.

In the Netherlands, the European Otter represents the ambassador of clean water and their appearance points to improvements in water quality in the Netherlands.

This animal was extinct in the Netherlands but has been successfully reintroduced in Overijssel since 20o2 and is currently found again in Overijssel, Friesland, Gelderland and along the major rivers.

The European Otter (lutra lutra) or also called fish otter, is a marten-like mammal and is the species with the largest range in the otter family.

The animal mainly eats fish, but also hunts amphibians, crustaceans, small mammals, birds and reptiles.
Existing populations of this semi-aquatic marten are found in a wide variety of freshwater habitats in Europe.

Otters are fortunately on the rise in the Netherlands these days.
Unfortunately, there are still far too many road casualties.
As otters are nocturnal animals, it is quite difficult to photograph them.
