Curral das Freiras, Valley of the Nuns or also called the Valley of the Nuns, can be found in the interior of Madeira. A little to the left above Funchal. This is a mountain village with magnificent views.
Its name refers to an event in 1566. The nuns of the Santa Clara convent in Funchal took refuge in this remote spot among the mountains while French pirates attacked and plundered their town. They then settled here and so a village was eventually built. Many places in this area still refer to the nuns
