Vanitas is a theme in art. The word vanitas is Latin and means 'vanity' and 'emptiness'. For example, skulls, extinguished candles, wilted flowers, soap bubbles, perished books, musical instruments, clocks or fallen glasses visualise the vanity, transience and meaninglessness of the earthly. The vanitas painting has Protestant-Christian origins. It urges the viewer to focus on eternal life. Franciscus Gijsbrechts, or Gysbrechts (Antwerp, February 1649 - place of death unknown, after 1677) was a Flemish painter, mainly of still lifes. Working as a court painter in Copenhagen in the 1670s, Francis Gijsbrechts worked in a Baroque style, with a relatively loose brushstroke. Most of his still lifes have survived, often with vanitas symbols.
