A vase of flowers, in this case lanterns, but photographed from above. An alternative point of view that produces a simple graphic image. Almost abstract.
The "lampionettes" of the lantern plant are visible only at the edges of the image but more than enough to recognize them.
The azure vase contrasts with the flower stems and especially the lanterns. Azure stands for summer while the lanterns are the ultimate autumn mood maker, a nice contrast.
I made quite a series of these still lifes, each time with different vases and flowers. Sometimes very colorful as in this work, sometimes more subdued.
In the title of the work you can often recognize where or from whom I bought the vase. Or borrowed it.
After leaving the academy in 1984, I painted for many years. Since about twenty years I have really only made photographic works. Mostly still lifes with glass vases. Glass is a fantastic -but also difficult- material to photograph.
I like to put people on the wrong foot with my works...
