Veins of steel

by Auke Hoekstra

The photograph shows an impressive industrial interior, captured in black and white. A tangle of pipes, tubes, cables and heavy metal structures fills the ceiling, forming a complex network above the space. In the right-hand foreground, a large, robust metal structure featuring a circular mechanical component immediately catches the eye. In the background, steel support beams, railings and various technical installations are visible. The stone floor draws the eye deeper into the space and provides a calm contrast to the hustle and bustle of the technical structures above.

The black-and-white processing emphasises the rough textures, the contrasts between light and dark, and the weathered materials. The light streaming in from the left lends the space extra depth and reinforces the atmosphere of an abandoned industrial environment. The photograph exudes an atmosphere of power, engineering, faded glory and industrial history. At the same time, there is a unique beauty in the jumble of pipes and structures: a world in which functionality and design come together in an almost artistic way.

This photograph was taken in the Landshaftpark in Duisburg (Germany).
This former industrial area is now a walking park, which 'is beautifully lit up in the evening.
