The Bridge of Sighs is a bridge in the Italian city of Venice.
The bridge is a connection between the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) and the prison. In the old days the convicts had to walk across this bridge before they were locked up in the cold and humid dungeons. Through the windows of the bridge the prisoners saw the light of day for the last time. The name Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) refers to their sigh on their way to their destination.
Casanova and Galileo Galilei were once locked up in prison.
