Venice (Italian: Venezia, Venetian: Venezsia) is a city in north-eastern Italy. It is the capital of the Veneto region and of the province of Venice. According to the city's own figures, Venice had a population of 271,251 on 1 January 2005, of whom about 62,000 lived in Venice itself, about 35,000 on other islands belonging to the city and over 170,000 on the mainland, mainly in Mestre. It is known worldwide for its historic centre with its many canals and has played an important role in world history. Since 1987, Venice and its lagoon have been on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
