Vernazza is a municipality in the Italian province of La Spezia (Liguria region). One of the five villages of the Cinque Terre, Vernazza has a long history: the village was probably founded as early as around the year 1000. One of the families that co-founded Vernazza is said to have given the name to the village: the Gens Vulnetia. Vernazza is said to be a corruption of that family name.
