It is almost the English version of Vermeer's view of Delft. Water, a tower, ships. But, this is Maldon an old trading town on a tidal river on the east coast of England. a quay full of nostalgia with old pubs, pilotage yards and along that quay the traditional English sailing cargo ships the Thames Barges. Especially in the late afternoon light with just rising water in which the boats still lie askew in the mud, it is a view of a town that could just as easily have been made a century ago.
