Porto da Cruz, 'Port of the Crosses' is a charming village located on the north-east coast of Madeira island. Named after the cross placed on the shore to indicate the port for Portuguese explorers. One of the many agricultural products here was sugar cane and until today the processing plant is still in full operation. People have been producing rum and honey balm there since 1927. Besides sugar cane, they also produce a dry red wine here, also known as 'vinho seco'. This is very popular and a grape festival is held in this village every year.
Porto da Cruz is also known by surfers; great for swimming and walking in nature along one of the many available paths through the beautiful landscape.
Between Porto da Cruz and Faial is a unique rock formation, called Penha D'Aguia or 'Eagle Rock', with a height of 580 metres, accessible along a steep path with fascinating panoramic views of the sea and surroundings.
