About ‘View of Ronda in Andalusia’ by Jürgen Wiesler

Ronda, one of Andalusia’s most dramatic towns, is picturesquely situated on either side of the deep El Tajo gorge. The view from the Puente Nuevo bridge offers a spectacular vista of the town and the gorge, which forms the heart of this place. Up close, the bridge appears as a centuries-old stone silhouette, its three construction phases between 1751 and 1793 demonstrating its quiet power. The most striking feature is the depth of the gorge, which rises in an almost vertical precipice, revealing the Río Guadalevín at the bottom. The gorge separates the old town (El Mercadillo) from the new town (La Ciudad), creating a natural boundary that divides the city into two distinct areas, each with its own character. From the Puente Nuevo, panoramic views open up, taking in the densely built-up alleyways, the historic buildings and the city’s open squares.
