View of Amsterdam's Central Station.
On a rainy day, the sun comes out, late in the afternoon, on the Damrak in Amsterdam.
The dark threatening sky adds a nice touch to this picture.
All the people are rushing home before the next downpour erupts, or find a spot in one of the many coffee shops and restaurants on the Damrak.
In the background is Central Station, designed by Pierre Cuypers.
The station was built on three docked islands in the IJ and built on wooden piles.
In October 1889, the station was opened amid huge public interest.
On the right (not visible in the photo), the tour boats are waiting for the many tourists visiting the city.
Just still visible under the crowns of the trees is the North-South Holland Coffee House on the station square.
During the construction of the metro, it was completely dismantled and the numbered parts were stored in a warehouse.
In 1980, it was rebuilt and once again stands proudly on the station square.
