About the artwork

View over the valley in Watarrka National Park, Australia.
Millions of years ago there were lakes in Watarrka NP. Central Australia was covered in sand dunes 400 million years ago. The climate was dry, but rivers flowed and lakes left their mark on the landscape. This created the ribs in the limestone.
Kings Canyon is a gorge in Watarrka National Park in the Northern Territory, Australia and lies on the western edge of the George Gill Range, 323 km southwest of Alice Springs and 1316 km south of Darwin.
The walls of Kings Canyon are more than 300 meters high. In the bottom of the gorge flows Kings Creek. Part of the gorge is a sacred place for the Aborigines. There are several hiking trails through Kings Canyon.
This picture was taken on 6 km long, 3 to 4 hours long Kings Canyon Rim Walk runs over the tops of the canyon. It starts with a steep climb ("Heartbreak Hill") that leads the walkers to the top, from where one has a spectacular view over the surroundings. Halfway through the walk, a side road leads to the Garden of Eden, an oasis of permanent water and abundant vegetation. The second half of the walk passes a maze of weathered sandstone.
