View of Matera's old town. Matera is the capital of the Basilicata region in southern Italy. The houses you see in the picture are in Sassi, the ancient city built out of rocks.
Many films have been shot in Matera. One of the most famous and recent is the James Bond film "No Time to Die", from 2021. Matera is a lovely city to stroll through. There are dozens of rock churches to visit in the old town and plenty of tourist accommodation. There are several panoramic spots, places from where you have a nice view of the old city. The old town is on UNESCO's world heritage list.
Matera lies in the valley of the river Gravina di Matera. If you go to the other side of the valley, you have a great view of the whole city. You can walk through the valley or you can take a bus to the other side of the valley. It's worth the effort!
