Volkswagen Karmann Ghia
Volkswagen contacted bodybuilder Karmann from Osnabrück in 1951 to build such a car. Karmann in turn turned to the Italian design agency Ghia from Turin for the design of a sports car. Ghia had already made a design for the American car manufacturer Chrysler in 1953. However, this had never been used. The design was adapted so that the model would fit on a slightly widened base plate of a Volkswagen Beetle.
