Among the nobles in the Low Countries who rebelled against the authority of Philip II, William of Orange emerged as the great leader of the rebellion. He defended his own interests, strived for greater independence and advocated freedom of religion. In 1580, Philip II put a price on his head; four years later he was murdered.
