This 74,000-hectare natural and cultural area is located in southern Jordan, near the border with Saudi Arabia. It features a diverse desert landscape consisting of a series of narrow gorges, natural arches, towering cliffs, slopes, huge landslides and caves. The petroglyphs, inscriptions and archaeological remains in this area testify to 12,000 years of human habitation and interaction with the natural environment. The combination of 25,000 petroglyphs with 20,000 inscriptions trace the evolution of human thought and the early development of the alphabet. The area illustrates the evolution of pastoral and urban activity and agriculture in the region.
