This painting depicts a vast Wadden Sea landscape at low tide, executed in a powerful and expressive impasto technique.
Painting style & Texture
• Thick layers of paint: The paint has been applied very heavily and tangibly, using a palette knife.
• Dynamic strokes: The grooved brush or palette knife strokes give the surface a three-dimensional texture in which the light is playfully captured.
Composition & Elements
• Meandering channel: From the centre, a narrow channel of water (arbour) winds its way towards the foreground. The blue-grey brushstrokes follow the flow of the water.
• Mudflats: On either side of the channel, marshy mudflats stretch out. The texture of the paint simulates the wet, bumpy silt and the remaining pools of water.
• Low horizon: The horizon lies very low in the picture, creating a strong sense of space and vastness. In the distance, subtle hints of a distant coastline or ships can be seen.
• Sky & Clouds: The upper half is dominated by a clear, azure-blue sky, with a cluster of thick, rounded cumulus clouds in shades of cream and grey on the right-hand side.
Colour palette
• Earth tones: The foreground is dominated by ochre, olive green, muddy brown and slate grey.
• Cool contrast: The warm earth tones of the silt contrast sharply with the crisp blue water and the clear sky.
