Veteran Belgian artist Jan keteleer has become world-renowned for his photorealistic paintings of young girls, which often have a gloomy, melancholic air. He has been dubbed the "people's painter" and was awarded as best Belgian artist in 2003. In 2008, a retrospective of his work in Warsaw received a record number of visitors. He first began painting in the 1970s, when he was still a student, and he copied the Old Masters, Impressionists, and Surrealists.
The paintings, known as Walking Girls, have earned Keteleer international recognition. Many critics and collectors have praised his work, despite its controversial subject matter.
