That loss is common would not make
My own less bitter, rather more:
Too common! Never morning wore
To evening, but some heart did break
In front of us we see an old woman comforting a younger girl. Her arm is wrapped around the shoulder of the young woman, who holds her head in her hands and cries for a fisherman who never came home. Look how the artist shows the moonlight dancing over the waves of the sea.
This agitation of human emotions is in direct contrast to the flat calm sea that we can see in the background of the painting. It is the calm after the storm that has claimed the life of the young woman's beloved. This is a very emotional painting and "speaks" more than any other words. It succinctly illustrates the tragedies that can happen to the family of working class fishermen as they fight against all weather conditions, simply to put food on the family table.
Walter Langley (Birmingham, England, 1852 - Penzance, 1922) was a British artist. He was the first of the Newlyn Group artists to settle there in 1882.
