Wanted Pearl is a quirky reinterpretation of Johannes Vermeer's world-famous painting Girl with a Pearl Earring. In this version, the iconic girl features a black bar in front of her eyes - a playful and critical reference to the imagery of crime journalism and anonymous perpetrators. The addition of this 'criminal bar' immediately raises questions: What has she done? What is she hiding? In doing so, the work invites the viewer to revisit the original masterpiece from a contemporary, ironic context. Was the pearl stolen, or is she herself the stolen icon?
This digital fine art fits perfectly into a modern interior with a touch of art-historical humour and provides space for dialogue on how we view classical art. Wanted Pearl is part of the Wanted Masters series: a collection in which old masters and contemporary satire meet in a visually powerful and intriguing interplay.
