It still exists: splashy natural water in which the soil and the plants that grow there can just be seen. The photo was taken in mid-April, the trees are still leafless and mirrored in the almost ripple-free water. The water lilies are not yet blooming but when they do, they produce flowers up to 20 cm. Water lilies are often an inspiration for photographers and painters. The latter included, for example, Claude Monet; his paintings of water lilies have become world famous.
I took the picture from a small bridge over the Zeijerwiek, an old waterway near Zeijen in Drenthe. The Zeijerwiek was connected to the Drentsche Hoofdvaart until the 1950s and was used to transport agricultural products.
