The water of the Rìo Elqui is dammed to the west of Vicuña, where it forms the Puclaro reservoir. With a capacity of about 200 million cubic meters, it contains about as much water as the Edersee in Germany, the Kölnbreintalsperre in Austria or the Lac de la Gruyére in Switzerland. While the latter were built to generate energy, the Puclaro reservoir is mainly used to irrigate the fruit and wine-growing areas in the Valle de Elqui.
