Tips for use

About ‘Water taxi Rotterdam’ by Edwin Muller

A water taxi races across the waves of the Maas in Rotterdam, turning sharply towards its destination. The speed is frozen in time, the splashing droplets betraying how fast it is really going. This beautiful black-and-white recording clearly shows how spectacular a ride in this fast mode of transport can be.

In the background, we see the beautiful pre-war buildings of the shipping district with their characteristic striped awnings. This historic neighbourhood feels almost un-Rotterdam-like amid the violence of the modern high-rise buildings that surround it.

On a beautiful day, I like to stand at the water's edge and watch all the activity on the river. These small boats, nicknamed water fleas, dart between the large shipping traffic of the port of Rotterdam in a setting that cannot be captured on film.

Are you a Rotterdammer through and through, or have you visited and want a nice souvenir? This photo gives a subtle image of Rotterdam without being too conspicuous.
