About "Weight of Expectation"

by Marloes van de Velde

About the artwork

The oppressive burden of unspoken expectations forms sight into a concentrated abstract play of lines that influences our choices and identity.
From the Brain Activity series.
White fineliner on pressed paper.

About the Brain Activity series

Brain Activity explores the tension between authenticity and adaptation. It is a study in contrasts: lines that collide and move, shapes that break and recover. This relief work brings a quiet, yet powerful expression of inner conflict and mental pressure. The use of white fineliner on pressed paper creates a tactile experience, inviting introspection and stillness amid the noise of everyday life.

Inspiration

This series is inspired by the inner tension in which we live: the constant balancing act between societal expectations and our true identity. In Brain Activity, I translate this mental turmoil and the dynamics of thoughts into a visual language of lines and relief. Each work is a reflection on the complex layering of emotions and the search for balance amidst chaos.
