About ‘Where the Sea Finds Me’ by Color Square

The work depicts a vast coastline from an almost bird’s-eye view. Deep blue water flows diagonally across the picture and meets a strip of light-coloured sand in an erratic, foaming motion. The sea is composed of various shades of blue: from bright azure to rich cobalt blue. Broad brushstrokes and tactile textures lend the water a sense of constant movement, whilst thick white accents make the breaking waves almost tangible.

In the midst of this vast expanse, a single small, dark figure walks along the tide line. It is precisely the small scale of this person that renders the surroundings monumental. The long blue shadow behind the walker forms a subtle yet powerful detail: it creates a fleeting connection between the person and the landscape. Around their feet, the wet sand glistens in silvery, beige and pale blue tones, as if the beach were a mirror of the sky.

It is striking that there is no clear horizon. As a result, the work becomes less of a traditional seascape and more of a tranquil image of space, seclusion and contemplation. The meandering surf acts as a natural path through the composition, drawing the eye time and again to the solitary walker.

This atmospheric coastal landscape combines figurative painting with an almost abstract treatment of water and texture. The result feels grand and meditative: a moment when man feels small and the sea seems to take over everything.
