About ‘Where the Wadden Breathe’ by Richard Zeinstra

Near Holwerd, right next to the jetty for the ferry to Ameland, lies an old wattle-and-daub dam that stretches out in a straight line across the mudflats. Thanks to a long exposure time, the water here has been smoothed into a silky, almost milky expanse — only the contours of the dam and a few loose stones break the tranquillity. In the foreground, the waves crash against boulders covered in moss and lichen, where the foam does indeed appear to be in motion: a beautiful contrast between the frozen stillness of the sea and the gentle dynamism of the splashing water right in front of the lens.

Above the water, heavy clouds are gathering, yet on the horizon the light still breaks through in a warm, golden glow — that moment just before sunrise or just after a shower, when the Wadden Sea reveals its own, elusive atmosphere. The straight line of the dam naturally draws the eye towards the horizon, like a path across the water, towards Ameland.

This tranquil, almost meditative image fits well in interiors where you’re seeking calm: a bedroom, bathroom or living room with a minimalist, Scandinavian or coastal-inspired atmosphere. A slice of the Wadden Sea that, despite the threatening sky, radiates tranquillity above all else.
