About ‘White Slave Houses’ by Bart Hendrix

In addition to the Red Slave Houses, there are also the White Slave Houses. The enslaved people worked during the day in the blazing sun on the salt pans to extract salt. Before these cottages were built in 1850, the workers had to walk for seven hours every weekend to reach their families in the village of Rincón after a gruelling working week. To minimise this loss of time and boost productivity, the stone cottages were erected close to the work site.
Sometimes as many as two to seven slaves would sleep in a single small cottage, sitting up, mind you.
