White-tailed eagle adult hunting in the sky over a Fjord near Vesteralen island in Northern Norway.
The white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) is one of Europe’s largest birds of prey, known for its impressive wingspan of up to 2.5 meters. It has a pale head, powerful yellow beak, and broad wings with distinct fingered tips. Adults display a mottled brown body with a characteristic white tail. Found near coasts, lakes, and rivers, it feeds mainly on fish and waterbirds, often scavenging as well. Once endangered, its populations are recovering due to conservation efforts. Also called the sea eagle, it builds large nests in tall trees or cliffs and is a symbol of wilderness and ecological resilience.
