he Wierdense Veld is a nature reserve north of national highway N35 between Wierden and Nijverdal in the Dutch province of Overijssel. Its surface area is about 420 hectares. It has been managed by Landschap Overijssel since 1968. A Natura 2000 site, the Wierdense Veld is a partially peat bog heathland area with dry and wet heathland, peat pits and birch thickets. A flock of about 300 Veluwe heath sheep often roams the heathland. Many rare birds occur. However, the grouse has disappeared from the area since the late 1990s. This raised bog area suffers severely from desiccation and grassing. It is hoped that drastic water management measures will enable the formation of new bogs in the future. A number of groundwater monitoring wells were installed for research purposes. In a subarea near the Prinsendijk, the groundwater level was locally raised by burying a foil screen. This results in humidity and an exuberant growth of all kinds of rare peat plants and mosses.
