About "Wild architecture: gannets and their bridge in the Ballestas Islands"

by Franck Perron

About the artwork

Located off the coast of Peru, the Ballestas Islands are home to some fascinating wildlife, and one of the most impressive sights is that of the gannets, gathered in a large colony on an old metal bridge. Once built to facilitate the extraction of guano, this abandoned structure has become a refuge for these seabirds, who use it to nest, raise their young and find protection. If you look closely, you can see the gannets perched on the beams, wings outstretched, some taking to the skies while others devote themselves to their family duties. Their white and black feathers contrast magnificently with the rusted metal of the bridge, creating a wild and astonishing picture where human architecture meets nature. This bridge, a relic of a bygone era, today embodies the link between man and wildlife, and bears witness to the return of nature. The scene is dominated by the piercing cries of the birds, the crashing of the waves and the smell of the sea, making this colony a unique and unspoilt place that bears witness to the incredible adaptability of the gannets.
