About ‘Willemsbrug Rotterdam from bottom to top’ by Karin Riethoven

The bridge connects the right bank of the New Maas with the North Island. The Willemsbrug played an important role during the Second World War. Marines defended this bridge and the adjacent railway bridge from the German invasion on May 10, 1940. The resistance of the Dutch marines was much stronger than the Germans had expected. The marines managed to hold back the advance of the German troops until the Germans decided to bombard the centre of Rotterdam on 14 May 1940. The old bridge from 1878 was replaced in 1981. This was the plan even before the Second World War, but it was postponed due to lack of money. The bridge is 270 metres long and 50 metres high.
