Willemstad is a fortified town and former municipality in the municipality of Moerdijk, in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant. Willemstad is located where Volkerak and Hollandsch Diep meet.
Although the city of Willemstad was founded in 1583, the first signs of habitation of this area go back many thousands of years. In 1968, during the construction of the Delta Works, an approximately 6,500 year old oak statue was found: the Male of Willemstad. It was found in a layer of peat at a depth of 8 metres between the remains of the roots of an oak tree. In the mesolithic it must have been deliberately placed between those roots. Due to the rapid rise of the groundwater level it ended up in a favourable conserving environment and was spared for posterity.
