Windmill and lock in the evening light by Sander Poppe

On quiet evenings, there is a special atmosphere at the Zevenhuizense Verlaat. As the sun slowly disappears behind the horizon, the first lights around the lock come to life. The warm glow of the lantern is subtly reflected in the water, creating a beautiful contrast with the cool hues of the evening sky.

The windmill overlooks the historic lock and has been a recognisable feature of this Dutch landscape for many years. It is precisely the combination of water, technology and history that makes this place so interesting to me. Not much happens here, but that’s not necessary. The tranquillity here lies in the simplicity of the whole scene.

During this sunset, the last light was captured by the wispy clouds above the landscape. This created soft colour transitions that lent the evening a tranquil atmosphere. The lighting at the lock added just the right amount of atmosphere without detracting from the landscape.

Thanks to the presence of water, the windmill and the subdued evening light, this photograph exudes a sense of tranquillity and familiarity. It is a typically Dutch scene that comes into its own in an interior where there is room for light, history and the atmosphere of the Dutch landscape.
