About the artwork
In the 17th century, the portrait was a popular genre for the wealthy bourgeoisie. It gave them the opportunity to have themselves portrayed in full to promote themselves in this way as leading citizens in society.
This work of art is a nod to the work of Johannes Cornelisz. Verspronck - The portrait of Maria van Strijp from 1652.
We take a look behind the mask of ostentation from the Dutch bourgeoisie. For although the 17th century is known as the Golden Age, with much prosperity and cultural enrichment of our country through overseas trade, there was indeed much poverty resulting in impoverishment and prostitution.
'Without a Mask' shows us a look inside.
All this in a playful, collage style. It is soft, but also frayed, lovely and disturbing, rich and poor, with a touch of punk.
This abstract collage was created in a very playful way by experimenting with painting functions and various layers in a digital image processing. To finish, there is a light texture over the work, which gives the feeling of having been painted on linen and ties the entire composition together.
The graying colors with pink, beige and black in the lead create a feminine yet bold look.
