The Kniepsand on Amrum is a fascinating geological phenomenon. Although it appears to be part of the island, geologically it is not part of Amrum and is a sandbank in its own right. This sandbank offers a 15 kilometre long and up to 1.5 kilometre wide sandy beach, which is ideal for long, secluded beach walks. The Kniepsand also serves as natural protection for the island against storm surges and hurricane-like weather conditions. The piles that can be seen in the sand are evidence of human activity and contribute to the unique atmosphere of this place.
