About the artwork

Industrial city that gives a bleak and gloomy view of the railroad track and where houses to house workers and environmentally unfriendly smoke spitting industry go hand in hand. The man in long coat sees all the terrible things in the industrial area as he stands by the route of the train.

Hans Baluschek (Breslau, now Wrocław in Poland, on the Oder 9 May 1870 - Berlin, Germany, 28 September 1935) was a German painter, graphic artist and illustrator. He belonged to the Berliner Sezession and made a name for himself as a socially committed artist.

The artist was the son of a railway engineer and remained fascinated by trains for life.

He studied at the University of the Arts in Berlin. In his student days he came under the influence of socialism. Social class differences became a main theme in his work.
