Gielliet was born on 14 May 1925 in Biervliet. He was best known for his wooden sculptures. Gielliet, however, was rather a pastor than an artist, although his own priesthood only came into its own when he was able to 'portray in wood what he really wanted to say'.
The basis for both callings in the past decades was the Sint Barbarakerk in Breskens, where Gielliet settled in 1970. His artworks from wood can be found there, but there are also dozens elsewhere in the Netherlands and Belgium. Several books were written about his work.
